From engineering operations apprentice to Junior 3D Print Technician
CAREERS IN 3D PRINTING
My name is Megan and I am proud to have successfully completed an apprenticeship in Engineering Operations at Paragon Rapid Technologies. The apprenticeship was conducted in collaboration with City and Guilds through Middlesbrough College.
Throughout the course, I gained valuable knowledge and skills in various areas, including Health & Safety, Lean Manufacturing, and Additive Manufacturing.
During my apprenticeship at Paragon, I specialised as an additive manufacturing (3D printing) apprentice focusing on, but not limited, to Stereolithography (SLA) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). I was actively involved in the preparation of machines for printing and post-processing tasks. Over time, I honed my skills in post-processing techniques, including spray painting. Additionally, I underwent training in setting up builds and troubleshooting CAD data, which proved particularly beneficial when the Multi Jet Fusion team was understaffed; I was able to assist them by preparing their builds.
During my apprenticeship at Paragon Rapid Technologies, I was fortunate to gain exposure to a wide range of areas within the company. I had the opportunity to work in CAD engineers and project engineers, where I learned valuable skills in creating prototypes and refining designs. I got to see prototypes being built using 3D printing, and watch the model shop turn these into masters ready for casting. Additionally, I gained hands-on experience in vacuum casting, reactive injection moulding, and CNC machining, which further expanded my capabilities.
This diverse exposure has provided me with a unique advantage—an insider’s view on how ideas and designs can be transformed into tangible realities. I have had the privilege of witnessing the entire journey of a part, from its inception to its completion, as it passed through various departments within the company.
Throughout the apprenticeship, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the operations within the company and developed skills that greatly contributed to its fast-paced environment. Not only did I enhance my teamwork and communication abilities, but I also cultivated a keen eye for detail.
Overall, my apprenticeship at Paragon Rapid Technologies provided me with a solid foundation in Engineering Operations, equipped me with valuable skills in additive manufacturing, and helped me thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
